Reminiscing the financial crisis of 2008, and taking into account the current economic trouble, taxpayers usually take the blow. Yet, they have no means to check the power of the globalized financial market. Government bailouts have perpetuated the status-quo of the financial system, which is exclusively focused on growth. The time is right to question that very system and to move towards a financial market that’s serving society.

The webinar will start with a presentation by Ann Pettifor (political economist, author and public speaker) on the relation between society and the financial market. This will be followed by a testimony of an ethical player in the financial sector, Triodos Bank, brought by Thomas Van Craen (Managing Director at Triodos Bank Belgium).

This is one of the two webinars leading up to the online conference The Economy of Francesco on 19, 20 and 21 November 2020. With this event Pope Francis aims to support a movement of young talented people, entrepreneurs, changemakers and economists from all over the world, who are eager to learn, exchange views, and collaborate for a just and inclusive global economy.

On 9 November Yana Rodgers (Rutgers University) and Ilse De Vooght (Femma) will discuss the second topic: Women, Work & Care. Towards a New Economic Balance.

Organized by UCSIA, the Trends Economy of Hope Chair and Economy of Communion Belgium.
